Why choose Langtang over EBC or the Annapurna Circuit?
Langtang offers genuine Himalayan scenery in half the time and without a flight. That makes it the most practical first Himalayan trek for people based in Kathmandu or with under two weeks.
The Langtang Valley is the third most popular trekking region in Nepal and arguably the most underrated. Where the Everest and Annapurna regions attract the bulk of international trekkers, Langtang remains quieter — the teahouses are less crowded, the prices lower, and the cultural experience more intimate.
The Tamang people of this valley have maintained their own Buddhist traditions, language, and architecture independently of the Sherpa culture of the Khumbu. Every village has a gompa (Buddhist temple) and prayer flags are strung across the entire valley.
The 2015 Gorkha earthquake triggered a massive avalanche that destroyed the original Langtang Village, killing more than 300 people. The community has rebuilt and the valley is fully open. Trekking here directly supports local recovery.
How serious is the altitude on Langtang?
Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m is high enough to cause altitude sickness in some people. Tserko Ri at 4,984 m adds a genuine high-altitude challenge.
The standard itinerary is well-paced for acclimatisation, with a rest day built in at Kyanjin Gompa. Most trekkers acclimatise without difficulty, but you should know the symptoms of AMS (headache, nausea, loss of appetite, insomnia) and have a plan for descending immediately if they appear.
The ascent to Tserko Ri is a very early start. The morning cold at that altitude (often -10°C in October) combined with the effort of the climb means this day demands good fitness and proper clothing.
